CENTRAL OHIO -- The Ohio Public Interest Research Group or PIRG has issued their 27th annual report on the most dangerous toys for small children.
You may look at a box of toy food... and see a great gift for kids. But it's the number one toy an Ohio watchdog group looks for.. and for good reason.
"This toy hot dog would be bad for child. If it fits easily in a choking tube, then it can easily be swallowed by a child,” said Tabitha Woodruff with Ohio PIRG.
The Ohio chapter of the Public Interest Research Group or PIRG.. says between 2005 and 2010, more than 50 children have choked to death on parts of toys, balls and balloons..
Stronger regulations have helped reduce lead in toys... but they say things like - strong magnets are still an issue.
Another problem is noise; the Dora Tunes Guitar was rated as having a high decibel level.
The National Institute on Deafness says that sounds that are above 85 decibels do cause gradual hearing loss. The Dora Tunes Guitar was rated as high as 93 decibels. To give you a comparison a vacuum rates at about 88 decibels.
Greg Larson, owner of Larson’s Toys, says they check out all of their toys and each one has a certificate of compliance from the Consumer Protection Commission. He says that parents need to look at the labels before they buy.
"They really need to pay attention to age appropriateness. If the product says it's for 18 months thru 5 years of age...it shouldn't be given to a 6 month old,” said Larson.
So what can you do to make sure the toy you are buying is safe?
Take a toilet paper tube with you to the store...if the toy fits in the tube...it can be swallowed. Keep updated on regulations and toy recalls and most of all use common sense.
