Claire’s recalls more sparkly children’s makeup after FDA finds asbestos

Like the teen star herself, Claire’s JoJo Siwa Makeup Set is colorful, sparkly and shimmery—but it’s now been found to contain asbestos.

On June 9, Claire’s voluntarily recalled this makeup set (Batch/Lot No. S180109), geared toward young girls, after the Food and Drug Administration found that it tested positive for asbestos, likely from the talc that gives these products sparkle. JoJo Siwa is in favor of the recall. 

“Children will be safer because Claire’s did the right thing and removed these toxic products,” said Kara Cook-Schultz, our national toxics program director. “But the fact that these products made it onto store shelves is alarming. That’s why we’re working at the state level to ban the use of asbestos in makeup—which is currently legal in all 50 states.”

Last year, U.S. PIRG Education Fund found asbestos in three other products sold by Claire’s, and in March, the FDA confirmed its results. Claire’s removed these products shortly thereafter.
